The Spiritual Significance of an Eclipse

Eclipse periods are a significant and fascinating phenomenon worth becoming familiar with. The energy of an eclipse actually begins to build before the exact date of one taking place, somewhat like an invisible gathering storm, and a subtle force of change is developing, a sense that “something is in the air.” The energy can also manifest as a certain sense of inner or outer “stillness,” which can be spiritually important, or the psychic atmosphere can feel more dense or more heavily charged than usual.

What generally takes place is the mating of the Sun, the male principle, with the Moon, the female influence, in an intense conjunction with either “Rahu” (the North Node) or “Ketu” (the South Node), which intensifies powerful karmic influences that have to do with our outlook on life on planet Earth. With this eclipse, the Sun and Moon are with Ketu in Taurus – related to spiritual issues, endings,  closures, transcendent experiences, and the reorganizing of the global financial and banking institutions: Taurus is one of the money signs.

Karmic Influences

Karmic influences can also be related to important geological or weather changes that affect large groups of people, or a city, a state, or important leadership positions around the world.

Some may experience the eclipse energy as restlessness or divine discontent, and others may feel a certain boredom, uncertainty, or feel a compelling need for some type of change of circumstances, or there may be the need for a new approach or attitude in some important area of the life.

Change means you that are headed into new territory, according to where the eclipse lands in your horoscope. This is particularly true if the degree of the eclipse is in the same degree of one of a planet in your natal chart (± 3 degrees), or on your ascendant (the degree of your rising sign), or on your MC (the noon point in your horoscope).

Destiny at Work

When a lunar or solar eclipse occurs in conjunction or opposition to one or more planets in your horoscope, it suggests that destiny is at work to create an important new direction in the life. It also suggests that the direction you have been in during the past few months or years is coming to a close, like the ending of a major chapter in a book.

At best, eclipses bring awakening, awareness and watchfulness. They are powerful catalysts for illumination and self-discovery. The idea is to go with the flow of the new direction opening up to you. In fact, if you resist this new direction, or stay stuck in the old, you could suffer or possibly have health problems as a result. This is particularly true if the eclipse takes place on or opposite the degree of your Sun, Moon, or Ascendant – all health-related indicators in your natal chart.

Path of the Solar Eclipse in Western US

In general, it’s better to let the old patterns die and allow the new ones to come into being by paying greater attention to your inner and outer life. As it is, certain people you no longer have anything in common with are likely to pass out of your life. Let them. It’s time to follow your true inner calling.

Overall, eclipse energies affect everyone on some level because it’s a global phenomenon. Everyone is being stirred up on some level or another, because to stagnate, to resist change, is to go against the powerful energies that are now inundating the planet to support its evolution.

If you’re familiar with the degrees of the planets in your horoscope, you’ll have a better idea of knowing how much you will be impacted, or not.

More Room for the Positives

There are good things happening as well during an eclipse period, but it may seem as if some area of your life is being stressed more than usual. Especially during the time of a lunar eclipse – such as on June 4 – the emotional tension and drama can be at a higher pitch. This build-up is part of the momentum of letting go and renewing your life.

Even after the eclipse period is over, on June 7, you may still need time to handle some of the major recent developments, some of which are likely to regenerate your overall life and be very constructive, positive and liberating.

Rule of Thumb

The basic rule of thumb during an eclipse period is to do only what you feel is necessary. The word necessary has a wide range of meanings, but it suggests that we not overload ourselves with too many activities, or take on too much of an extra load, while the power of the eclipse season is active and tends to bring a general uncertainty. The trick is to handle what comes up unexpectedly and stay in the moment, as the eclipse period brings forth the necessary energy to bring your life into alignment with the deepest purposes of the soul. After June 7, the energies of life begin to settle down and “normalize”.
